Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers about classes, safety, beginners, children and the first step.

Is Gilbert Self Defense a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu school?

Jiu-jitsu is central to our training, but the curriculum is organized around self-defense rather than sport competition alone. Standing defense, striking, clinch control, takedowns, ground survival, restraint and escape form one system.

Do I need martial arts experience?

No. The beginner curriculum is designed for people with no previous experience.

Do I need to get in shape first?

No. Training improves conditioning, mobility, balance and strength over time, and classes scale to current ability.

Is the training safe?

All physical training carries risk, but safety is built into the method. Students learn control, tap early, release immediately and add intensity progressively.

Do you spar?

Yes. Live resistance and pressure drills are introduced progressively and matched to experience.

Do you teach striking?

Yes. Students learn strike protection and focused defensive strikes that connect to control or escape.

Will this make my child aggressive?

The program is designed to do the opposite. Children learn avoidance, assertiveness, help-seeking, physical protection and responsible control.

Do you teach weapons defense?

We teach awareness, distance, barriers, escape priorities and selected emergency responses, while being honest that no empty-hand technique guarantees safety.

Can older adults train?

Yes. Efficiency matters more than athleticism alone, and instructors adjust for disclosed injuries or limitations.

How often should I train?

Two consistent classes per week can create meaningful progress for many beginners. Consistency matters more than occasional intensity.

Do you offer private lessons?

Yes, subject to instructor availability.

What is the first step?

Schedule an introductory class or conversation. We will explain the program and help you choose the right starting point without pressure.

Still have a question?
